TRUE Native Review
There is an important distinction to be made between “true native" and “near-native” technologies. Traditionally, all of the programs needed to open each of the file types included in a document collection had to be available for every reviewing attorney. The software licensing costs alone were formidable, and few organizations could afford the time and money needed to manage the ongoing updates, licensing and maintenance issues. In response, creators of document review platforms developed various methods of temporarily converting the native files so that they could be accessed by a single, common application. Typically, the format of choice is TIFF, although some platforms convert files to HTML. The review platform is then able to display the converted file in a common viewer application – no special software is required. Such “near-native” technologies face a serious shortcoming, however – once the files are converted, their dynamic characteristics such as formulae, column width and hidden text are no long available. In effect, near-native platforms present a frozen snapshot of the data, not the true, native data itself. Inspicio® offers fully-integrated TRUE native file review.
